The Junction

Welcome to the Photojunction Team blog. We welcome your comments.

December 2009

You are currently browsing the monthly archive for December 2009.

Hi everyone!

The full PJ crew are back in the saddle for 2010 after a well deserved break… We trust you managed to take time out to relax and celebrate with friends and family.

The small beach town of Ohope was my choice of retreat this year. As well as strolling the fairways of the country golf course and relaxing on the beach, I spent a little time reflecting on the decade some are calling the ‘noughties’.

10 years ago I arrived in New Zealand to explore my family roots (my Dad’s a Kiwi and my Mum’s American). How time flies – cliché I know – but I remember counting down to the millennium in Matamata. Not many people can say that!

Think about all the things you didn’t know then. I didn’t know…

- I would live in New Zealand for the next 10 years
- My soon-to-be wife, Natalie
- The All Blacks would be knocked out of two more World Cups
- I would be diagnosed with cancer… (in remission 7 years later)
- How to spell “haematology” the English way ;)
- Nearly as many photographers and geeks as I do now.

Plus all sorts of stuff that most people wouldn’t find too interesting.

So, here’s to the next ten years…

Happy New Year and welcome back from Danny and everyone at Team PJ and Queensberry.

Boxing Day

Boxing Day Sales in New Zealand are just like Black Friday in the States. Nigel is hitting them up, but I’m opting out this year for a game of croquet instead.

Happy Boxing Day!

Danny

p.s. The Boxing Day article is worth a read.

Hi All

Just quick note to thank you for using our software and to say Happy Holidays, and we hope you enjoy them – we will be.

We’re closing down from today the 23rd December to 5th January to enjoy our family, friends, bbqs, beaches, and hopefully fine weather.

See you on the other side and if you’re celebrating Christmas, check out Dylan’s Christmas record ;-)

Cheers
Danny

This will be our third release in three months – notice a trend?

The last two were betas adding the new features you’ve wanted and now this final builds on them to give a stable platform to start 2010.  So to jog your memory here are a few of our favourites…

Photojunction 1.32b (release notes)
Alignment got some serious attention (accuracy, stickiness, and clarity)
Centering got smart (wings, flips, and panoramic)
“Undo” got a speed boost (‘nuf said)

Photojunction 1.33b (release notes)
Start window got a makeover (uploads, blog, store and more)
Instant Slideshow got resurrected from Retro (play back while you work)
Creating albums from templates got an auto option ( templates + images = done )
Uploading got versatile (now you can re-upload full or partial orders)
Preferences got extended (for slideshows, instant slideshow & proof sheets)

These represent a lot of work on their own, but I’ve not mentioned so many other fixes and tweaks – feels like we’re getting somewhere.  These are virtually all your suggestions – it’s a good feeling to satisfy clients … but you already know that.  I’ll leave you with an email from an old friend, the kind we like to get.

Cheers
Danny

“To all the PJ dudes – I just found the ” Hide Used Images ” feature.  Most of our albums
have 100 plus images in them. I was the SOB that was begging Danny for years to
incorporate that feature.

It’s now twice a fast to use with templates.  The share and save templates option now
works 100 times faster too. It’s 99.9% there !!!!!”

Smart centering

Photojunction’s ‘align to page centre’ button has got a whole lot smarter…

In the past it just placed your image in the middle of the page (whether standard or panoramic etc). Now it thinks a bit harder about what you might be trying to do. It considers whereabouts on the layout the image is when you click the button.

For example if you’re designing a panorama page, and your image is sitting on the right hand page, Photojunction will align the image to the centre of the right page, as in the screen shot below, just as if it was a standard layout. Previously it would have put the image in the centre of the layout, over the spine.

centring1

But if your image is already sitting partially over the spine when you click the button, Photojunction will align it to the centre of the layout.

centring2

And Photojunction will now align to the centre of Wings and Flips, not to the centre of the page that the Wing or Flip is attached to.

centring3Cool eh. We didn’t call it ’smart’ centering for nothing ;)

Cheers, Danny.

Preferences enable you to customise Photojunction to reflect your preferred and most commonly used settings…

Now we’ve added some new settings that give you the ability to set defaults for Slideshows (including Instant Slideshows), and Proof Sheets.

Set them up by going to ‘Preferences’ in Photojunction, or click on the images below to take a quick peek…

Proof Sheets:

Instant Slideshows:

Any default option you’ve set can always be changed on the run when you’re designing, but trust me, doing a once-off Preference set up will save you loads of time.

Instant slideshow

I’m not gonna lie, Photojunction’s slideshow creator is pretty quick. You can easily create a slideshow of an album design, including transitions and background music, in under a minute.

But get this. In 1.33b we’ve introduced an even quicker slideshow feature. Lightning quick. Click of a button quick!

The new Instant Slideshow feature creates a slideshow of the album design you’re working on, and displays it on your second monitor if you have one (if not, it’ll display on your primary monitor).

That’s very handy if you’re working on a design with a client and want to show them a quick preview of how it’s looking.

Right click on any layout in the Preview Palette and select ‘Play full screen slideshow’…

Or select the ‘Instant Slideshow’ option from the Menu item.

Photojunction’s new feature is a timesaver.

It auto creates an album from a selected template collection, and populates the apertures with images from a selected image Group or Collection.

Before we move on, a disclaimer… Auto Flow is a simple feature. There’s no clever algorithm built in to choose and place images in a deliberately coherent order. We’re leaving some of the creative stuff up to you ;)

You’ll find the Auto Flow option by clicking the ‘More’ button in the Event Window. Just click the ‘Create album from templates’ option and you’re away.

Picture 2

Photojunction will ask you to choose a Template collection (all templates must be either single or double sided), and the Group or Collection you’d like it to pull the images from.

Picture 3

Then voila! Photojunction will do all the grunt work and leave you to tell the story.

Cheers, Danny

Picture 4

As well as giving uploads their own tab on the Start Window we’ve introduced two “re-upload” options for Queensberry clients: ‘Full’ and ‘Partial’.

The Full Re-upload option, as the name suggests, uploads the entire order to Queensberry (the complete bundle - layouts, proxies, reports, everything).

Picture 5

The Partial Re-upload option allows you to re-upload just part of the order.

Here’s an example. Say Queensberry spotted some sensor dust on a couple of your images in layouts one, two and three. Instead of re-uploading the whole bundle, you could make the adjustments, and re-send just those three layouts.

Not only does it make life easier for you if you need to re-send parts of an order, but it makes keeping track of what you’re sending easier too.

Cheers, Danny
